The OSG 1400119405 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile and malleable metals without cutting or removing material. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, it produces 10-24 UNC right-hand threads using a plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads for gradual thread engagement. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and carries a TiN (titanium nitride) coating to reduce friction and extend tool life. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread limit of H6 and a Class 2B fit. Licensed machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading applications in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Its thread-forming action displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger thread forms with no chips to clear. It is appropriate for production machining environments and maintenance repair operations where a reliable 10-24 UNC thread is required in ductile workpiece materials.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Material application codes P and N apply. Verify workpiece ductility before use, as thread forming taps require sufficient material plasticity to form threads without fracture.
Thread forming taps require a specifically sized forming tap drill — do not use a standard cut tap drill size for this operation, as the correct drill diameter is larger than a cutting tap equivalent. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and apply an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material. Use a calibrated torque-limiting tapping attachment where possible to prevent tap breakage. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements throughout the operation.
