The OSG 1400118600 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting, producing strong, work-hardened threads by displacing material rather than removing it. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, this tap carries a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H7 thread limit provides consistent tolerance control for 10-24 UNC threads. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 0.194-inch shank diameter, it fits standard tapping chucks and CNC rigid tapping setups used by machinists and toolroom professionals.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it the right choice when thread engagement must extend deep into a blind hole or when clearance above the hole is limited. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is engineered specifically for thread forming rather than thread cutting.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material Application Codes P and N confirm suitability across these material groups. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14001.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill — consult the OSG HY-PRO NRT forming tap drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter for 10-24 UNC. Use a cutting fluid or tapping lubricant rated for the workpiece material; thread forming generates more torque than cutting taps, so ensure the tapping driver or CNC spindle is set to an appropriate torque limit. Always secure the workpiece and confirm the drill depth provides adequate clearance before tapping to the required depth. This tool is intended for use by qualified machinists and CNC operators familiar with thread forming processes.
