The OSG 1400118505 is a thread forming tap designed for 10-24 UNC threads, manufactured from cobalt and finished with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating. This tap uses a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. It operates with a right-hand thread direction and carries an H6 thread limit with a Class 2B fit. Overall length is 2.375 inches, with a thread length of 0.492 inches and a tapping depth of 0.866 inches. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians install this tap in production and maintenance applications where chip-free forming is required.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading across a range of metals. Rated material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The HY-PRO NRT series designation indicates OSG's cold-forming geometry, which displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger formed threads with no chips to clear. It is well-suited for CNC tapping centers, drill presses with tapping attachments, and manual tap handles where controlled torque is maintained.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 10-24 UNC threads at a Class 2B fit.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — use the correct recommended tap drill diameter for 10-24 UNC cold-form tapping, as it differs from standard cut tap drill charts. Power down all equipment before installing or removing the tap from the holder. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material; adequate lubrication is critical for thread forming operations. Ensure the tapping attachment or spindle provides sufficient torque control to avoid tap breakage in harder materials.
