The OSG 1400118301 is a thread forming tap designed for 10-24 UNC blind hole threading applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. At 2.375 inches overall length with a right-hand thread direction and H4 thread limit, it fits standard tap chucks and holder systems used in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is suited for machine tapping operations in metal fabrication, maintenance repair, and production machining environments. The HY-PRO NRT series is engineered for use in blind hole conditions across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Typical applications include threading tapped holes in structural components, brackets, and machine parts made from carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It carries a Class 3B fit designation and an H4 thread limit, appropriate for close-tolerance fastener applications.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces. Suitable for use with standard 10-24 UNC tap holders and chucks. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from standard cut tap drill sizes — consult OSG or tooling reference charts for the correct pre-drill diameter before use. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole to prevent breakage. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material, particularly with stainless steel and hardened alloys. Power down or de-energize any CNC or tapping equipment before changing or inspecting tooling.
