The OSG 1400118205 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting, producing stronger threads by work-hardening the material rather than removing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating, this tap is engineered for demanding applications in blind holes requiring a 10-24 UNC thread form. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. With an overall length of 2.375 inches and a thread limit of H3, this tap suits precision threading work performed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations in materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The chipless forming action makes it particularly effective in production environments where chip evacuation is a concern. It is a right-hand thread tap from the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, commonly used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where controlled feed rates can be maintained to match the thread pitch.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring a 10-24 UNC right-hand thread. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series (Series 14001).
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size — do not use standard cut tap drill charts, as forming taps require a slightly larger pilot hole. Always apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before tapping. Use a tapping machine, CNC rigid tapping cycle, or torque-controlled tapping attachment to maintain consistent feed and avoid tap breakage. Ensure the spindle is fully powered down and the workpiece is securely fixtured before tool changes.
