The OSG 1400118200 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 10-24 UNC internal threads without cutting or removing material. Instead of cutting flutes, it cold-forms the thread profile, displacing metal to create stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it suited for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish, it carries a Thread Limit of H3 and is rated for right-hand threading. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, or tapping fixtures.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications across a range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The cobalt construction supports work in tougher alloys where standard high-speed steel taps lose edge life prematurely. Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill size — consult OSG or published forming tap drill charts for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Power down or de-energize any CNC spindle or tapping unit before loading or changing tooling. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material to reduce forming torque and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for wear or galling after use in hardened or stainless steel materials.
