The OSG 1400116205 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it is rated for 8-36 UNF right-hand threads and carries an H4 thread limit. The modified bottoming chamfer, with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of a blind bore. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a shank diameter of 0.168 inches. This tap is installed by machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople in precision threading operations.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Its thread-forming action displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with no chip evacuation concern. Typical applications include tapping fastener holes in precision machined components where thread integrity and hole cleanliness are critical.

This tap is installed using a standard tapping chuck or tap wrench sized for a 0.168-inch shank. Secure the workpiece and verify hole depth meets the required tapping depth before threading. Apply appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to extend tool life. Thread forming taps require higher torque than cutting taps; verify that tapping equipment torque capacity is adequate for the material and thread size.
