The OSG 1400115005 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting or removing material. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), it produces 8-32 UNC right-hand threads with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The overall length is 2.125 inches with a tapping depth of 0.752 inches and a thread limit of H10. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this tap where chip-free threading is required, such as in production machining and precision assembly work.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The thread forming process work-hardens the thread flanks, producing stronger threads compared to cut taps in ductile materials. It is appropriate for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where controlled feed rates and proper tapping fluid can be applied consistently.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces, as indicated by material application codes P and N.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — consult an 8-32 UNC thread forming drill chart before drilling, as the required hole diameter differs from standard cut tap practice. Use a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material to reduce galling and extend tap life. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is driven at a controlled, consistent feed to avoid tap breakage. This tool should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist familiar with thread forming processes and machine tapping procedures.
