The OSG 1400114501 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. Unlike cutting taps, this tool displaces material to produce stronger, chip-free threads. It is specified for 8-32 UNC threads with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well suited for blind hole applications where thread depth is critical. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, the tap offers improved lubricity and wear resistance under demanding production conditions. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a shank diameter of 0.168 inches.
This tap is intended for use in blind hole threading operations across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It carries material application codes P and N, covering alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It is suited for machine tapping in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where right-hand threads are required. The modified bottoming geometry allows the operator to form threads closer to the bottom of a blind hole compared to standard taper or plug chamfer taps.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces requiring 8-32 UNC right-hand threads to a class 2B fit.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole — consult published forming tap drill charts for 8-32 UNC, as the correct hole diameter differs from standard cut tap drill sizes. Secure the tap in a rigid holder or floating tap head to minimize axial misalignment. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil compatible with the workpiece material before and during operation. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the workpiece is clamped securely before tap changes or setup adjustments.
