The OSG 1400114408 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Rated for 8-32 UNC thread size with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, it is built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating for improved wear resistance and heat tolerance. The H4 thread limit designation ensures dimensional accuracy in close-tolerance threaded holes. At 2.125 inches overall length with a 0.168-inch shank diameter, this tap fits standard tapping chucks and holders used in production and maintenance machining environments.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications across a broad range of metallic workpiece materials. It performs in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows thread forming to begin near the bottom of a blind hole, maximizing usable thread depth. It is well suited for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand tapping setups where chip-free threading is required and material ductility supports cold forming.
Designed for use in ductile metallic materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, per OSG material application codes P and N. Intended for blind hole threading where chip-free cold forming is appropriate for the workpiece material.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material; consult the material manufacturer or tooling data for recommended tap lubricant type. Ensure the tap is aligned axially with the drilled hole before engagement to prevent cross-threading or tap breakage. Power down or de-energize the machine spindle before changing or inspecting taps. Use a properly sized tap drill per 8-32 UNC thread forming drill charts, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps of the same thread size.
