The OSG 1400114101 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in a variety of metals without cutting or removing material. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, this bottoming-style tap features a 1 to 1.5 thread chamfer that allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, the 1400114101 provides increased hardness and lubricity compared to standard HSS taps. The overall length is 2.125 inches with a shank diameter of 0.168 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in CNC machines, drill presses, or tapping arms for high-volume or precision threading operations.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications in both production and maintenance environments. The H5 thread limit provides a close tolerance fit appropriate for standard 8-32 UNC fastener assemblies. It is rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The bottoming chamfer design makes it well suited for applications where thread depth must be maximized in shallow or short through-holes, including machine frames, enclosures, fixtures, and structural assemblies requiring 8-32 UNC threads.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 8-32 UNC right-hand threads. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps must be used with a properly sized forming tap drill — standard cut tap drill sizes do not apply; consult an 8-32 UNC thread forming drill chart for the correct hole diameter. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless or hardened steel. Secure the tap in a rigid holder to maintain concentricity and prevent galling. Ensure the machine or tapping arm is set to the correct RPM and feed rate for the material being tapped.
