The OSG 1400114005 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or producing chips. Sized at 8-32 UNC with a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, it enters blind holes with minimal clearance and forms a full thread profile close to the bottom of the bore. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating to extend tool life and reduce friction during the forming process. With a thread limit of H4 and right-hand thread direction, it suits precision tapping in controlled production and repair environments. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in manual or CNC tapping operations.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. Its material application range covers alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, making it a versatile option across general metalworking, toolroom, and production floor applications. The bottoming chamfer geometry is specifically suited for jobs where thread engagement must begin as close as possible to the bottom of a drilled blind hole, such as fixture building, mold work, and precision assembly.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Fits standard 0.168-inch shank tapping chucks and tap wrenches configured for 8-32 UNC tooling.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill size for the same thread — consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart for 8-32 UNC before drilling. Secure the workpiece and use a tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless or alloy steel. On CNC equipment, use rigid tapping mode with synchronized spindle and feed to match the 32 TPI pitch. Inspect the tap for wear or galling regularly, as thread forming taps in hardened or stainless materials are subject to accelerated flank wear.
