The OSG 1400113908 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in steel and non-ferrous metal applications. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, it displaces material rather than cutting chips, producing strong, work-hardened threads without the swarf removal concerns associated with cut taps. Built from cobalt high-speed steel (HSS-CO) and finished with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap handles the heat and abrasion demands of production threading. It carries an H3 thread limit and is configured for right-hand, 8-32 UNC threads. Licensed trade machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users.
This tap is suited for bottoming applications where thread depth must extend close to the bottom of a blind hole. The bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads allows threading to within a minimal distance of the hole bottom, which is critical in tight-tolerance assemblies. It is appropriate for use in steel and non-ferrous metals, covering material application codes P and N. Typical install scenarios include production machining, maintenance and repair operations, and fabrication environments where 8-32 UNC fastener threads are required in blind bores.

Thread forming taps require a larger pilot hole diameter than cut taps of the same size — consult the OSG HY-PRO NRT recommended drill chart for the correct forming drill diameter before use. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned with the spindle axis to prevent tap breakage, especially in blind holes. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material; dry tapping is not recommended. Power down all equipment before manually inspecting or removing the tap from the holder.
