The OSG 1400112205 is a thread forming tap designed for internal thread production in blind hole applications. It operates on a 6-40 UNF thread standard with a modified bottoming chamfer, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole while still engaging the workpiece with a controlled lead-in of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this tap offers elevated heat resistance and wear resistance relative to standard HSS tooling. The overall length is 2 inches, with a thread length of 0.370 inches and a tapping depth of 0.685 inches. It carries a class of fit 3B and a thread limit of H3. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and CNC operators install this tap in production and maintenance environments.
This tap is suited for threading blind holes in a range of metallic materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, die steel, hardened steel, and aluminum. The thread forming process displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chip generation. This makes it particularly well suited for through-feed or CNC tapping operations where chip evacuation is a concern. It belongs to the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is engineered for high-performance cold-forming applications in both production and job shop settings. Right-hand thread direction is standard.
Designed for blind hole thread forming applications in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, series number 14001.
This tap is installed and driven by machinists or CNC operators using a standard tapping chuck or rigid tap holder sized for the 0.141-inch shank diameter and 0.110-inch square drive. Ensure the spindle speed and feed rate are set to the tap manufacturer recommendations for the specific workpiece material before engaging. Thread forming taps require lubrication or tapping fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to prevent galling. Verify blind hole depth is sufficient to accommodate the full tapping depth of 0.685 inches plus any required tool clearance before beginning the operation.
