The OSG 1400110705 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in a 6-32 UNC configuration. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating to extend tool life and reduce friction during tapping. It features a modified bottoming chamfer, making it suitable for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 2.0 inches with a thread limit of H6. It is used by machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance technicians working in production and job-shop environments.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a range of workpiece materials. Rated material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads allows threading into shallow blind holes where a plug or spiral-point tap cannot reach bottom. Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from the standard tap drill size used for cutting taps — consult the OSG HY-PRO NRT series chart for the correct pre-drill diameter for 6-32 UNC cold forming. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material, particularly with stainless steel or hardened steel. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is driven straight and at consistent speed to avoid galling or tap breakage. Always retract and clear the tool path before reversing in a blind hole setup.
