The OSG 1400110405 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), it is suited for demanding applications where heat resistance and tool life are critical. The 6-32 UNC configuration with a modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes, making it a practical choice for precision machining work in production and repair environments. The H3 thread limit delivers consistent Class 3B fit tolerances. Machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is well suited for threading blind holes in a wide range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads makes it effective in tight-depth applications where standard plug taps cannot reach the required thread depth. It is commonly used in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and production lines where close-tolerance 6-32 UNC fastener threads are required. The HY-PRO NRT series designation indicates this tap is optimized for form-tapping rather than cut-tapping processes.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 6-32 UNC right-hand threads to a Class 3B fit standard.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized form-tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap pilot hole — consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct diameter before drilling. Secure the tap in a rigid tapping fixture or CNC tapping cycle with tension-compression float to avoid tap breakage. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil to the workpiece before tapping, particularly when working in stainless steel or hardened materials. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace when thread quality degrades.
