The OSG 1400110008 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting or producing chips. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN for improved wear resistance and lubricity, this tap produces stronger threads by displacing material rather than removing it. The bottoming chamfer style — with 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads — allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The overall length is 2 inches with a thread length of 0.37 inches and a tapping depth of 0.685 inches. Part of the HY-PRO NRT series, this tap is suited for use by machinists and tooling professionals working in precision manufacturing and fabrication environments.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of metals including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The 6-32 UNC thread size and right-hand thread direction make it a common choice for fastener tapping in electronic enclosures, instrumentation housings, and light mechanical assemblies. The H3 thread limit and Class 3B fit designation ensure close-tolerance thread production appropriate for precision assemblies.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Material application codes P and N indicate suitability for steel and non-ferrous materials respectively.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication and correct spindle speed selection for the work material — consult published tapping speed charts for cobalt taps in the target material before use. Always secure the workpiece and use a properly sized drill bit to achieve the correct pre-tap hole diameter for thread forming, which differs from cutting tap drill requirements. Power down and de-energize any CNC or drill press before installing or changing tooling. Do not use thread forming taps in brittle materials such as cast iron or hardened materials beyond the rated hardness range.
