The OSG 1400107805 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, it handles demanding materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, die steel, hardened steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer, spanning 2 to 2.5 threads, allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The H4 thread limit maintains dimensional control for 5-40 UNC threads. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this tap in CNC machining centers and drill presses where chip-free thread forming is required for hole integrity and thread strength.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous base materials. It is appropriate for production environments where chip evacuation is a concern and work-hardening materials such as stainless steel demand the additional hardness and lubricity that cobalt construction and TiN coating provide. The right-hand thread direction and 5-40 UNC designation make it a standard choice for small-fastener applications in precision machined assemblies, instrument enclosures, and light structural components.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups per standard tooling classification.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming hole diameter, which differs from a standard tap drill size — consult the applicable forming tap drill chart for the 5-40 UNC specification before machining the pilot hole. A cutting fluid or tapping compound rated for the workpiece material should be applied to reduce torque and extend tool life. This tap does not have coolant-through capability, so external lubrication is required. Installation is performed by machinists; torque limits and spindle speeds should follow the machine tool manufacturer's guidelines for the workpiece material.
