The OSG 1400106505 is a thread forming tap designed for 4-48 UNF threads, built from cobalt steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form threads by displacing material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger threads and no chips to clear from the hole. This tap carries a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads and an H3 thread limit, making it well-suited for close-tolerance work in blind holes. It is used by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance professionals working in precision threading applications.
This tap is rated for blind hole threading in a range of materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Its cobalt construction handles the heat and wear generated in tougher alloys, while the TiN coating extends tool life and reduces friction during the forming process. Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is typically larger than a standard cut tap drill size for the same thread — consult a thread forming drill chart before drilling. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material, particularly when working in stainless or hardened steel. Use a calibrated torque driver or tapping machine where possible to avoid overloading the tap in small-diameter applications. Power down any machine tool and secure the workpiece before tap installation or removal.
