Thread forming taps require the correct tap drill size for the material and desired thread engagement — consult published UNF forming tap drill charts before drilling. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel or hardened steel. Use a calibrated torque-limiting tap handle or CNC tapping cycle with rigid tapping to avoid tap breakage in small-diameter applications. Verify the spindle is properly aligned before engaging the tap to prevent cross-threading or tool deflection.
