The OSG 1400106005 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-form tapping of internal threads without chip generation. It produces a 4-40 UNC right-hand thread using a plug chamfer with 4 to 4.5 chamfered threads for progressive thread engagement. Constructed from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiN coating, it delivers increased wear resistance and longer tool life in demanding applications. The H4 thread limit provides consistent dimensional control. Overall length is 1.875 inches with a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. This tap is installed by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working in precision threading operations.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading applications across a broad range of metallic workpiece materials. It is rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The cold-forming action displaces material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger thread form and no chips to clear from the hole. Typical install scenarios include production machining, MRO work, and precision fabrication where 4-40 UNC threads are required in blind or through configurations.
Designed for through-hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum workpieces requiring 4-40 UNC internal threads. Material application codes P and N apply per the manufacturer classification.
Thread forming taps require proper lubrication and tapping fluid matched to the workpiece material. Ensure the tap is driven with a calibrated torque-limiting holder or tapping head to prevent overload and tool breakage. Power down spindle and secure the workpiece before tap changes. Thread forming taps are not interchangeable with cutting taps in the same pre-drilled hole size — consult the manufacturer drill size chart for the correct forming tap pilot hole diameter before drilling.
