The OSG 1400105708 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 4-40 UNC internal threads without cutting chips. Rather than removing material, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile, which results in stronger threads and eliminates chip evacuation concerns. This tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and carries a TiCN coating for increased surface hardness and heat resistance. With a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, it is suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. The overall length is 1.875 inches with a tapping depth of 0.559 inches. Machinists and toolroom technicians use this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping setups.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It is well suited for high-production environments where thread strength and surface finish are critical. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading deeper into blind holes compared to standard plug or taper chamfer taps. The right-hand thread direction follows standard UNC thread convention. This is a Series 14001 HY-PRO NRT tap from OSG.
Designed for 4-40 UNC blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, which differs from standard cut tap drill sizes — consult a forming tap drill chart before setup. Ensure the tapping machine or tap handle is properly aligned to avoid tap breakage, particularly in small-diameter taps such as this 4-40 size. Use a lubricant or cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce forming forces and extend tap life. Do not use this tap as a cut tap or attempt to reverse-thread an already cut hole.
