The OSG 1400105605 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting or producing chips. It operates on the 4-40 UNC thread standard and features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard bottoming tap. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), this tap handles demanding materials and elevated heat generated during thread forming. It carries an H6 thread limit for precise tolerance control. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this tap in CNC machining centers and drill presses where clean, chip-free threading is required.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a wide range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Its right-hand thread direction and cold-forming process make it especially effective in applications where chip evacuation is difficult or where thread strength must be maximized. The HY-PRO NRT series from OSG is commonly found in production machining environments, job shops, and precision manufacturing operations requiring consistent thread quality in small-diameter fastener holes.
Designed for blind hole threading applications in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces where a 4-40 UNC internal thread is required.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists using CNC machining centers, drill presses, or tapping heads with a machine-thread tap holder. Power down all equipment and secure the workpiece before setup. Use the appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tool life. Do not exceed the recommended spindle speed for the material being tapped, and never reverse a thread forming tap under power without confirming the machine is programmed for it.
