The OSG 1400104405 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting chips. Sized for 3-56 UNF right-hand threads, this tap produces clean, strong threads by displacing material rather than removing it, which eliminates chip-related tap breakage in blind-hole applications. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel for elevated heat and wear resistance, and carries a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that further extends tool life in demanding materials. With a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, it is optimized for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die technicians working in precision fabrication and MRO environments are the primary users.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a range of metals across residential, commercial, and industrial manufacturing settings. Its material application includes alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, making it a versatile choice for machine shops, maintenance departments, and production environments where 3-56 UNF threads are required in tight-depth bores. The HY-PRO NRT series is engineered for use without coolant-through tooling, relying on the forming process itself to reduce heat buildup at the cutting zone.
Designed for blind hole threading applications requiring 3-56 UNF right-hand threads with a 2B class of fit and H3 thread limit. Suitable for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces (material application codes P and N).
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a cutting tap drill size for the same thread — consult the appropriate tap drill chart before drilling. Power down and secure the workpiece before tapping operations. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce forming pressure and protect the tap. This tap does not use coolant-through delivery, so external lubrication is essential in production use.
