The OSG 1400104305 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting or producing chips. Sized for 3-56 UNF right-hand threads, it is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating to improve wear resistance and reduce friction during tapping. The modified bottoming chamfer, with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 1.813 inches with a thread length of 0.496 inches. This tap is installed by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working with small-diameter precision fastener applications.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading operations in a range of materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Its cold-forming action eliminates chip evacuation concerns, making it particularly useful in blind hole applications where chip packing is a risk. The H2 thread limit and Class 3B fit make it appropriate for precision threading work requiring tight tolerances in both production and maintenance settings.
Designed for use in blind hole threading of ductile materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, where cold-forming of 3-56 UNF internal threads is required.
Thread forming taps require higher torque than cutting taps and should be used with a properly sized tap wrench or CNC tapping cycle that provides torque control. Always use a recommended tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce galling and extend tap life. Ensure the pilot hole diameter is sized correctly for thread forming rather than thread cutting, as undersized holes will cause tap breakage. Follow applicable shop safety practices and machine guarding requirements when tapping on powered equipment.
