The OSG 1400104000 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-form tapping of internal threads in a range of metallic workpiece materials. Unlike cutting taps, this tool displaces material rather than removing chips, producing stronger threads with improved surface finish in the tapped hole. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish and an H5 thread limit, it is configured as a modified bottoming tap with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to tap close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 1.813 inches with a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. It is suited for use in machine shop and production environments by machinists and tool-and-die professionals.
The OSG 1400104000 is intended for blind hole threading applications at a 3-48 UNC thread specification, producing right-hand threads at 48 threads per inch. Material application includes alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming chamfer design makes it well suited for short blind holes where thread engagement close to the bottom is required. Tapping depth reaches 0.535 inches with a thread length of 0.496 inches, supporting production runs where consistent thread depth is critical. No coolant-through capability is present on this tap, so conventional cutting fluid application at the spindle is the standard approach.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces per material application codes P and N. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14001 tap line for cold-form tapping applications.
Thread forming taps require proper hole preparation with a recommended forming drill diameter larger than the standard tapping drill for cut taps; refer to OSG or machinery handbook forming drill charts for 3-48 UNC. This tap should be driven at appropriate spindle speeds with adequate lubrication applied to the work, as chip clearance is not a factor but lubricant film is essential to prevent galling. Use a torque-controlled tapping attachment or CNC tapping cycle when possible to avoid tap breakage in small-diameter applications. Always confirm workpiece is securely fixtured before operation.
