The OSG 1400103805 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or removing material. It produces 3-48 UNC threads using a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing work close to the bottom of blind holes. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this tap offers improved wear resistance and heat tolerance in demanding tapping applications. It carries a Class of Fit 2B and Thread Limit H3. The overall length is 1.813 inches with a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and production line technicians typically deploy this tool in precision threading operations.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The HY-PRO NRT series is built for applications where thread strength and surface finish quality are priorities, such as aerospace, automotive, and industrial fixture work. The right-hand thread direction and H3 thread limit make it a reliable choice for standard production tolerances in shop and field environments.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 3-48 UNC, Class 2B, right-hand internal threads.
Thread forming taps require a correctly sized forming tap drill hole — consult OSG or standard thread forming drill charts for the 3-48 UNC forming drill diameter before starting. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce torque and extend tap life. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole before engagement. Do not use this tap in through-hole applications where chip evacuation from a cutting tap would be preferred.
