The OSG 1400103205 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile metals without cutting chips. It carries a 2-64 UNF thread specification with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, making it well-suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it offers improved heat resistance and wear life compared to standard HSS taps. The right-hand thread direction and H3 thread limit support consistent Class 2B fit across production runs. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading operations on a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The chipless forming action reduces the risk of chip packing in blind holes, which is a common problem when tapping small-diameter threads in difficult materials. It is appropriate for use in machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where precise depth control is available. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to hole bottom than a standard plug or taper chamfer would permit.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Material application codes P and N. Designed for blind hole threading applications requiring a 2-64 UNF internal thread with a Class 2B fit.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming hole diameter, which differs from a standard cut-tap drill size — consult a thread forming hole size chart before drilling. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce forming forces and protect the tap. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is driven on-axis to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage. Power down or disengage the spindle before manually handling the tap or clearing the work area.
