The OSG 1400103000 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting. It produces a 2-56 UNC thread profile using a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well-suited for shallow blind hole applications. Constructed from cobalt high-speed steel with a bright finish and an H7 thread limit, this tap delivers consistent dimensional accuracy in demanding production and maintenance environments. The right-hand thread direction and compact overall length of 1.75 inches make it a reliable choice for machinists and toolroom technicians working on fine-thread fastener applications.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading operations across a range of metallic workpiece materials. It is applicable in job shop, production machining, and maintenance repair contexts where thread forming rather than thread cutting is preferred to produce stronger threads with improved surface finish. The modified bottoming chamfer allows the tap to reach near the bottom of blind holes with minimal relief. Suitable for use in manual tapping, CNC tapping, and rigid tapping setups where consistent thread quality is required.
Designed for thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Suitable for blind hole threading applications requiring a 2-56 UNC thread form. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a specific tap drill size optimized for form tapping, which differs from cut tapping drill charts — consult OSG or standard form tap drill tables before drilling the pilot hole. Power down or de-energize any CNC or tapping machine before installing or changing the tap. Use a quality tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tool life. Inspect the tap shank and square for wear or damage before each use to avoid thread quality issues or tap breakage.
