The OSG 1400102705 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting chips. Sized at 2-56 UNC with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, it produces strong, work-hardened threads in a single pass. The tap is constructed from cobalt high-speed steel for improved heat and wear resistance, and it carries a titanium nitride (TiN) coating to reduce friction and extend tool life. With an overall length of 1.75 inches and a thread length of 0.437 inches, it is built for compact, precise work in blind hole applications. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers.
This tap is rated for blind hole threading across a broad range of metals, including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The H4 thread limit designation suits close-tolerance tapping work where dimensional control is critical. Its right-hand thread direction and modified bottoming chamfer make it well suited for threading holes that do not pass through the workpiece. The HY-PRO NRT series is a recognized standard in precision thread forming for production and repair machining environments.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous metal groups. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series 14001.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size — consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before use. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole to avoid tap breakage and thread distortion. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. This tap does not use coolant-through capability, so external lubrication is required.
