The OSG 1400102405 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for producing 2-56 UNC internal threads in blind holes without cutting chips. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, resulting in stronger threads and no chip evacuation concerns. The 1400102405 is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel for elevated heat and wear resistance, and carries a TiN (titanium nitride) coating to further extend tool life. The bottoming chamfer — 1 to 1.5 chamfered threads — allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. This tap is sized for precision fastener applications and is handled by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians.
The 1400102405 is suited for blind hole threading operations in a range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Its material application codes (P and N) indicate compatibility with ferrous and non-ferrous metal groups. The bottoming geometry makes it the correct choice when thread depth must be maximized in a blind bore, such as in fixture plates, tooling blocks, and precision mechanical assemblies where 2-56 UNC fasteners are used.

Compatible with standard tap holders and collets sized for a 0.141 inch shank diameter with a 0.110 inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — the correct hole diameter is larger than a standard cut tap drill for the same thread size; consult a forming tap drill chart for 2-56 UNC before drilling. Secure the workpiece and use a rigid tapping setup or CNC rigid tap cycle to maintain alignment and prevent tap breakage in this small diameter. Apply appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material before tapping. Inspect the tap for wear regularly, as cobalt tooling in hardened materials will show accelerated flank wear over time.
