The OSG 1400102301 is a thread forming tap designed for creating 2-56 UNC internal threads without cutting chips. Made from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this bottoming tap is built for use in blind hole applications where full thread depth close to the bottom of the hole is required. It operates with a right-hand thread direction and carries a Class 2B fit with an H3 thread limit, making it suited for standard tolerance threading work. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die technicians are the primary users. The 1.75-inch overall length and 0.437-inch thread length make it a compact, precision tool for small-fastener work.
The OSG 1400102301 is rated for use across a wide range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Its bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads makes it the correct choice when threading must extend as close to the bottom of a blind hole as possible. It fits into standard tap holders with a 0.141-inch shank diameter and a 0.110-inch square drive. This tap belongs to the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is engineered specifically for thread forming rather than thread cutting, meaning no chips are produced during the tapping operation.
Designed for use with standard tap holders and tapping heads that accept a 0.141-inch shank diameter with a 0.110-inch square drive. Rated for threading alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, catalog series 14001.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication at the tap and workpiece interface — use a tapping fluid appropriate for the workpiece material. Power the machine down and secure the workpiece before tool changes. Do not reverse a thread forming tap under power without confirming the tapping head supports reversal. Use a torque-limiting tap holder when working with small-diameter taps to avoid breakage.
