The OSG 1400102208 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 2-56 UNC internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear from the hole. This tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating for extended tool life in abrasive and high-heat cutting conditions. With a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 1.5 threads, it threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. It carries a Class 3B fit and an H2 thread limit for tight-tolerance thread production. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this tap in manual or CNC tapping operations.
This tap is suited for threading small-diameter blind holes in a range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Its right-hand thread direction covers the majority of standard fastener applications. The bottoming chamfer makes it the correct choice when thread depth must extend to within one or two pitches of the hole bottom, a common requirement in precision assemblies and close-tolerance fixtures. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is engineered specifically for thread forming in both ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series (Series 14001).
This tap is installed by machinists using a standard tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping cycle sized for the tap shank diameter. Because it is a forming tap, correct hole preparation is critical: the tap drill size for thread forming differs from that used for cut tapping and must be selected per the manufacturer or tooling reference for 2-56 UNC forming. Apply appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material before use. Coolant-through is not available on this tap, so external lubrication is required.
