The OSG 1400101701 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind holes without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with a steam oxide finish, this tap handles demanding threading applications where heat and wear resistance are critical. It carries an H3 thread limit and a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. The overall length is 1.688 inches with a thread length of 0.374 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. Right-hand thread direction, 72 threads per inch, 1-72 UNF.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Typical applications include precision fastener holes in aerospace components, hydraulic fittings, instrumentation housings, and small mechanical assemblies where a clean formed thread profile and close-tolerance fit are required. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it especially useful when thread engagement must start near the bottom of a shallow or restricted hole.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, not a standard cut tap drill — use the correct drill diameter for the material and thread class before tapping. Secure the workpiece and use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil recommended for the workpiece material to reduce forming forces and extend tool life. Power down and de-energize any CNC or tapping machine before tool changes. Follow shop safety practices and applicable OSHA machine guarding requirements when operating drilling and tapping equipment.
