The OSG 1400101605 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, it displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this tap handles demanding materials while resisting wear and heat buildup. It is configured with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, an H2 thread limit, and a right-hand thread direction. Machinists and toolroom mechanics working on precision small-diameter fastener applications will find this tap suited to tight-tolerance production work.
This tap is sized for 1-72 UNF threads, a fine-pitch unified thread commonly used in small mechanical assemblies, instrument components, and precision hardware. It is appropriate for use in both manual tapping operations and machine tapping setups. Material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, covering a broad range of common shop materials. The blind hole configuration and modified bottoming chamfer allow threading close to the bottom of a drilled cavity, making it well suited to shallow blind holes where thread depth is critical.
Designed for use in blind hole threading operations on alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 1-72 UNF internal threads.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from a standard tap drill — consult published forming tap drill charts before setup. Power down all equipment and secure the workpiece before mounting the tap in the holder. Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the specific work material to reduce galling and extend tool life. This tap is intended for use by machinists and skilled toolroom personnel familiar with small-diameter tapping operations.
