The OSG 1400100408 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile metals without cutting chips. Sized for 0-80 UNF threads, it features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, providing elevated wear resistance and heat tolerance in demanding tapping operations. It drives with a right-hand thread direction and carries an H4 thread limit. Machinists and tool and die professionals use this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping arms where chip-free thread forming is required.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in a range of materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The thread forming method displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to evacuate from the hole. It is a practical choice for precision aerospace, medical, and general manufacturing applications where thread integrity and small-diameter consistency are critical. The 0-80 UNF size serves miniature fastener applications common in instrumentation and fine-thread assemblies.
Designed for forming 0-80 UNF internal threads in blind holes across ductile workpiece materials including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap drill size — consult the appropriate UNF forming tap drill chart before drilling. A suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate to the workpiece material should be applied before and during tapping. Ensure the spindle and tap holder are properly aligned to avoid tap breakage at this small diameter. Always de-energize and lock out machine power before changing or inspecting tooling.
