The OSG 1400100101 is a thread forming tap in the HY-PRO NRT series, designed for cutting internal 0-80 UNF threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut chips, producing stronger threads with no swarf to remove. The tap is constructed from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, giving it good thermal resistance and lubricity for demanding materials. The bottoming chamfer — 1.5 to 2 threads — allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Right-hand thread direction and an H3 thread limit produce a Class 2B fit suitable for general fastener applications.
This tap is suited for precision machining operations in job shops, tool rooms, and production environments where small-diameter blind hole threading is required. The cobalt construction supports use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Its compact geometry — an overall length of 1.6913 inches — makes it appropriate for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads where limited clearance is a factor. No coolant-through capability is required, making it compatible with standard tapping setups using flood or hand-applied cutting fluid.

Thread forming taps require a specific drill size matched to the forming tap specification — consult the OSG HY-PRO NRT drill size chart for the correct pilot hole diameter before tapping. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is driven square to the hole axis to avoid thread misalignment or tap breakage. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material, especially with stainless and hardened steels. When using in a manual tapping handle, apply steady, consistent pressure without forcing the tap.
