The OSG 1400100008 is a thread forming tap designed for cutting 0-80 UNF internal threads in blind holes. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating for improved wear resistance and heat tolerance. The bottoming chamfer style, with 1.5 to 2 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. With an overall length of 1.6913 inches and a thread length of 0.3173 inches, it is suited for precision work on small fastener applications. Machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in a wide range of metallic materials, including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The HY-PRO NRT series from OSG is built for form tapping applications where chip-free thread production is required. It is well suited for production environments and toolroom use where 0-80 UNF threads are needed in small-diameter holes, such as those found in instrument components, electronic hardware, and precision mechanical assemblies.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring 0-80 UNF internal threads at a Class 2B fit. Material application codes P and N apply.
Thread forming taps require a forming tap drill size, which differs from standard cut tap drill sizes — consult a forming tap drill chart before drilling the pilot hole. A tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material should be used to reduce friction and extend tool life. Secure the workpiece firmly and use a tapping machine, CNC machine, or tapping head to maintain axial alignment and prevent tap breakage in this small diameter. Inspect the tap for wear or deformation before each use, as cobalt taps in fine-thread applications can fracture without visible warning if misaligned or over-torqued.
