The OSG 1312805 is a standard pipe tap designed to cut 1/4-18 NPTF (National Pipe Taper Fuel) threads in ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction during thread cutting. The 4-flute, regular-hook geometry produces clean, accurate tapered threads suited for pipe fittings, hydraulic ports, and fluid-transfer connections. With an overall length of 2.44 inches and a thread length of 1-1/16 inches, this tap fits standard tap wrenches and machine setups used by pipefitters, machinists, and HVAC-R technicians working with threaded pipe connections.
This tap is intended for threading 1/4-18 NPTF pipe connections in carbon steel, cast iron, and aluminum workpieces. Typical applications include creating tapered fuel-tight pipe threads in manifolds, pipe fittings, valve bodies, and ported housings. The NPTF thread profile provides a mechanically sealed joint without relying solely on thread sealant, making it the correct choice for hydraulic and fuel-line service work. The 0.5625-inch shank diameter fits standard tap holders used in both hand-tapping and light machine-tapping operations.
Designed for cutting 1/4-18 NPTF threads in carbon steel, cast iron, and aluminum workpieces. Fits standard 0.5625-inch tap holders and tap wrenches used in hand and light machine tapping applications.
Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for 1/4-18 NPTF threads. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Back the tap out periodically to break and clear chips, especially in blind-hole applications. Inspect threads with a NPTF plug gauge after tapping to confirm thread form and engagement before assembly.
