The OSG 1236400 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 5/16-24 UNF internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel with a bright finish, this plug chamfer tap pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting edge, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations. The H4 thread limit holds tight tolerance control on the 2B class of fit, and the 3-flute geometry provides efficient chip evacuation at moderate feed rates. Overall length is 2.719 inches with a thread length of 1.125 inches and a shank diameter of 0.318 inches. Right-hand thread direction. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users of this tap.
This tap covers a broad material application range including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. It is appropriate for general production threading, job-shop work, and maintenance repair operations where a standard 5/16-24 UNF through-hole thread is required. The plug chamfer configuration requires a clear exit path for chips, so it is best applied in through-hole setups rather than blind-hole applications. Series 105 designation identifies it within the OSG standard tap product line.
Designed for through-hole tapping of 5/16-24 UNF threads in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel workpieces.
This tap should be installed in a rigid or floating tap holder to prevent misalignment and thread distortion. Power down or de-energize all machinery before changing tooling. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain thread quality. Follow shop-floor speeds and feeds recommended for high-speed steel taps in the specific workpiece material being threaded.
