The OSG 1233208 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 5/8-11 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and lubricity compared to uncoated HSS taps. The plug chamfer provides gradual thread engagement suited for through-hole applications. With 3 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, this tap pushes chips forward ahead of the cut, reducing recutting and helping maintain thread quality. Overall length is 3.813 inches and thread length is 1.91 inches. Licensed machinists and maintenance technicians use this tap in production and repair environments where accurate 3B-class fit is required.
This tap is suited for threading through-holes in materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. The TiCN coating makes it a practical choice in higher-volume or abrasive material applications where uncoated tools wear prematurely. The H3 thread limit provides controlled oversize for use with standard 3B class of fit tolerances, making it a go-to option for general-purpose UNC threading work in both shop and field maintenance settings.
Rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. Fits standard 5/8-inch tap holders and chucks accepting a 0.48-inch shank diameter.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping operations and thread standards. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned with the drilled hole before engagement to avoid tap breakage or thread damage. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the material being threaded to extend tool life, even though coolant-through is not required. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements when operating under power.
