The OSG 1230200 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 1/4-20 UNC holes in a wide range of materials. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the cutting edge rather than backing them out, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations. Built from high-speed steel with a bright finish and no coating, the tap carries an H3 thread limit and a 3B class of fit, meeting standard tolerance requirements for most commercial threading applications. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in of approximately 3 to 5 threads, reducing the torque required to start the cut. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users of this tap.
The OSG 1230200 is appropriate for use on aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. The plug chamfer and spiral point design make it a practical choice for production through-hole tapping on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping arms. It is well suited for both light manufacturing and maintenance, repair, and operations environments where 1/4-20 UNC threads are a common fastener standard.
Designed for cutting 1/4-20 UNC right-hand threads in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel workpieces. Suitable for use with standard 1/4-20 tapping chucks and holders accepting a 0.255-inch shank diameter.
Tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard shop safety practices. Always use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material, and ensure the tap is properly aligned to the drilled hole to avoid tap breakage. Secure the workpiece fully before starting the cut. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if cutting edges show damage.
