The OSG 1225002 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 1/4-20 UNC holes in a wide range of metals. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward through the hole, keeping the cutting zone clear during through-hole tapping operations. The tap is manufactured from high-speed steel and carries an elektraLUBE coating that reduces friction and extends tool life compared to uncoated HSS taps. With a 2-flute design, H2 thread limit, and 1 inch of thread length, this tap suits production and maintenance threading work in general machining, fabrication, and repair environments. Installation is performed by machinists and tool-and-die technicians using manual tap handles or CNC and drill press setups.
This tap is suited for through-hole applications where chip evacuation is a priority. The plug chamfer provides a gradual thread lead-in, making it appropriate for starting threads in pre-drilled through holes rather than blind holes. Compatible material applications include aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel, covering most common production and maintenance threading scenarios.
Designed for threading 1/4-20 UNC through holes in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel workpieces using standard tap holders, T-handle wrenches, or CNC rigid tapping setups.
Thread cutting taps should be installed and used by machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with proper tapping procedures. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for 1/4-20 UNC before starting. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to supplement the elektraLUBE coating and extend tool life. Never force a tap against resistance — back off periodically to break chips, especially in deeper through holes.
