The OSG 1215608 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 2-56 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a TiCN coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and reduced friction compared to uncoated taps. The plug chamfer style makes it suitable for through-hole applications where chips are pushed forward ahead of the cutting action. With 2 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, it is sized for precision threading in small-fastener work common to electronics, instrumentation, and light mechanical assemblies. Licensed machinists and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
The 1215608 is rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. Its compact geometry - 1.75 inches overall length and a 7/16 inch thread length - suits benchtop drill presses, CNC tapping centers, and hand-tapping operations where fine thread control is required in confined or small-bore workpieces. The H5 thread limit provides a controlled oversize allowance appropriate for plated or tight-tolerance threaded holes.
Designed for cutting 2-56 UNC right-hand internal threads; compatible with aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel workpieces as specified by the manufacturer.
Tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using a calibrated tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC spindle set to the correct RPM for the material and tap size. Always apply appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound before starting the thread. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole to avoid tap breakage, which is a significant risk at the 2-56 size. Replace worn taps immediately - a broken tap in a small-diameter hole is difficult to remove without damaging the workpiece.
