The OSG 1214208 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads to a 12-24 UNC specification. It features a plug chamfer, 2-flute geometry, and an H3 thread limit, making it suitable for through-hole tapping operations where chip evacuation forward is preferred. Manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) and finished with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers improved wear resistance and reduced friction compared to uncoated alternatives. Thread class of fit is 2B/3B. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread length of 0.52 inches and a shank diameter of 0.22 inches.
This tap is intended for use in machine tapping and hand tapping applications across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. The TiCN coating makes it particularly well-suited for abrasive materials and higher-production environments where tool life is a primary concern. It is commonly used by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance professionals working on mechanical assemblies, fixtures, and fabricated components.
Compatible with aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. Designed for use in standard 12-24 UNC through-hole tapping applications with 2B/3B class of fit requirements.
This tap should be installed in a rigid or floating tap holder appropriate for the machine and material being threaded. Always ensure the workpiece and machine spindle are properly aligned before beginning the tapping cycle to avoid tap breakage. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped. Follow standard shop safety practices and power down or de-energize any equipment before manually handling or changing tooling.
