The OSG 1214201 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal threads in through-hole applications. It is manufactured from high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating to reduce friction and extend tool life. The tap produces 12-24 UNC threads with a plug chamfer, right-hand thread direction, and an H3 thread limit, making it suitable for general-purpose threading in production and maintenance environments. With 2 flutes and a spiral point geometry, the tool pushes chips ahead of the cut rather than backing them out, which improves chip flow in through-hole work. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users.
This tap is well-suited for through-hole threading operations across a wide range of materials. The material application list covers aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel, making it a versatile choice for job shops, production floors, and field maintenance work. The 12-24 UNC thread form is common in fastener applications across machine components, electrical enclosures, and general fabrication. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in, balancing ease of starting with efficient thread production.
Designed for use in standard tap holders and tapping heads accepting straight-shank taps with a 0.22-inch shank diameter. Compatible with 12-24 UNC through-hole threading applications in the materials listed above.
This tap should be installed in a properly sized tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC tapping holder rated for the shank diameter. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap-drill size for 12-24 UNC before beginning the threading operation. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to maximize tool life. Back the tap out periodically if cutting by hand to break and clear chips, even though the spiral point is designed to push chips forward in through-hole work.
