The OSG 1207408 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 6-32 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. With a plug chamfer and 2-flute geometry, the spiral point pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, reducing chip clogging and supporting through-hole tapping applications. Built from high-speed steel and finished with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers increased surface hardness and lubricity compared to uncoated HSS. Overall length is 2 inches with a thread length of 0.39 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. Class of fit is 3B with an H2 thread limit for controlled tolerance. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians use this tap in manual and CNC tapping operations.
The OSG 1207408 Series 105 tap is suited for tapping 6-32 UNC threads in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. Right-hand thread direction makes it compatible with standard tapping attachments and tap wrenches. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in that is appropriate for through-hole applications where chip evacuation forward of the tap is acceptable. It is a single-unit item with no coolant-through feature, making it practical for bench work, drill press setups, and CNC machining centers using flood or mist coolant externally.
Designed as a standard 6-32 UNC spiral point tap compatible with manual tap wrenches, tapping heads, and CNC rigid tapping setups that accept the corresponding shank diameter of 0.141 inches. Material applications include aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel as specified by the manufacturer.
Tapping operations should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with thread-cutting tools and appropriate cutting fluids for the workpiece material. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the correct tap drill size for 6-32 UNC is used before tapping. Apply appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the material being threaded; TiCN-coated taps perform well dry or with light fluid on aluminum but benefit from cutting oil on steel. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if thread form shows signs of degradation to avoid undersized or damaged threads.
