The OSG 1207002 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal threads in through-hole applications. It uses a plug chamfer and two-flute spiral point geometry to push chips forward and out of the hole, reducing chip packing and improving thread quality at production cutting speeds. Built from high-speed steel and coated with elektraLUBE, this tap delivers consistent performance across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It cuts a 5-40 UNC thread profile with a right-hand direction, a 0.625-inch thread length, and an H2 thread limit for 2B and 3B class-of-fit tolerances. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians reach for this tap in job shop and production environments alike.
This tap is suited for threading through-holes in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. The 5-40 UNC thread size is common in instrument panels, small fastener assemblies, electronic enclosures, and precision mechanical components. The plug chamfer makes it the standard choice when the full thread depth begins close to the entry of the hole and chip evacuation forward through the work is practical.
Compatible with aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. Designed for through-hole tapping where forward chip ejection is appropriate.
This tap is installed by machinists and tool-and-die technicians using a standard tap holder or tapping head on a drill press, CNC machining center, or tapping machine. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is aligned perpendicular to the work surface before tapping. Apply cutting fluid or use flood coolant to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Do not reverse a broken tap under power; use approved tap extraction methods if the tool fails in the hole.
