The OSG 1205405 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 1-72 UNF internal threads in a wide range of materials. It features a 2-flute, plug chamfer geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, reducing clogging in through-hole applications. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this tap delivers improved wear resistance and reduced friction compared to uncoated HSS tooling. The H2 thread limit holds close tolerances for a 2B class of fit. Overall length is 1.688 inches with a thread length of 0.37 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. Right-hand thread direction. Machinists and toolroom technicians use this tap for precision small-diameter threading work.
The OSG 1205405 is suited for through-hole threading in production and maintenance machining environments. The 1-72 UNF thread form is commonly found in miniature fastener applications in electronics, instrumentation, and precision mechanical assemblies. Designed as a standard 1-72 UNF spiral point tap compatible with tap handles, tapping heads, and CNC tapping attachments that accept the corresponding shank diameter of 0.141 inches.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist using a properly sized tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC spindle with rigid or floating tap holder. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for a 1-72 UNF thread before tapping. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and tool wear. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, especially when working in hardened steel.
