The OSG 1200600700 is a standard pipe tap designed to cut NPTF (National Pipe Taper Fuel) threads in a range of metal workpieces. Manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap produces 1/4-18 tapered pipe threads suited for leak-free pressure fittings and fluid system connections. It features 4 flutes with a regular hook geometry, a thread length of 1-1/16 inches, and an overall length of 2.437 inches. Licensed plumbers, pipefitters, and machinists rely on NPTF pipe taps when assembling threaded pipe connections that must seal without a separate sealing compound.
This tap is intended for tapping NPTF pipe threads in carbon steel, cast iron, and aluminum workpieces. Typical applications include creating threaded ports in manifolds, valve bodies, fittings, and pipe flanges in plumbing, HVAC, and industrial fluid-handling assemblies. The 1/4-18 designation indicates a 1/4-inch nominal pipe size with 18 threads per inch, a common size for instrument ports, pressure taps, and small-diameter pipe connections in both residential and light commercial systems.
Designed for use in carbon steel, cast iron, and aluminum workpieces requiring 1/4-18 NPTF tapered pipe threads. Fits standard tap wrenches and machine tap holders sized for a 0.5625-inch shank diameter.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist, pipefitter, or plumber using a properly aligned tap wrench or tapping attachment to avoid tap breakage. Always apply an appropriate cutting oil or tapping fluid before and during the tapping operation. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and that the starting hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 1/4-18 NPTF threads before beginning. Back the tap out periodically to clear chips, particularly in deeper holes or when working in cast iron.
